Episode 97: The Real Story Behind Success with Misty Phillip

We interviewed media leader, Misty Phillip, about how she took an idea and ended up with a calling. She’s the host of By His Grace podcast, author of the Bible study, The Struggle is Real, and creator of the Spark Media brand in radio and podcasting. She also founded the Spark Media Conference for podcasters and the Spark Media Awards.

Here’s a glimpse into what we talked about:

When asked how she made an entire media company a reality, she explained that endurance is the force behind her success. “You can’t start something like this and think it will grow overnight. It takes time and nurturing.” Misty tells us to stop “seeking and striving.” Often, when you strive for success or seek it above all else - it will consume you. Instead of striving she suggests inviting God into the dreams and vision of your heart. That’s how your calling is built.

Misty has a busy family and is the mother to a special needs son. She holds it all together by keeping good boundaries. She explains that we need to be aware of the seasons in our lives. Some seasons have more space and room than others. Some seasons are heavily driven by family needs and strokes towards marriage, while others are more open to move forward and run with a career. The difference between burnout and success is knowing the difference.

Misty credits her time alone with Jesus for enabling her to hear the voice of God leading her in the right directions. “You can’t be led if you’re not listening. As podcasters and communicators we have a front seat to what’s happening in the world, but if we’re not leaning in to the One we love, we’ll listen to the wrong voices and communicate the wrong messages.”
