Episode 9: Identity Crisis: Who Am I?
Do you ever wonder “Who am I?” Not just what do I do, or what am I interested in...but who am I to God? How does He see me?
In the book of Judges we see a man named Gideon struggling with an identity crisis. Israel was under attack from a neighboring land called Midian, and Gideon was sick of the way they attacked and pillaged the land. When an angel of the Lord visited Gideon, the angel greeted him in a powerful way. “O Valiant Warrior!” he called out, but Gideon felt like anything but a valiant warrior. As the angel shared God’s plan for GIdeon to lead the people in destroying the Midianites, Gideon had many questions and excuses...but God persisted in renaming Gideon, and encouraging him for the task at hand.
God had a plan for Gideon long before he had a plan for himself. If God were to rename you based on your desires to serve and love Him, what might He name you?
That same night the angel of the Lord told Gideon to tear down the strongholds in his father’s backyard. God knew that before Gideon could be used for a big assignment, the idol worship taking place in his own backyard needed to come down. It’s wise to look within our own family to see if there’s anything displeasing to God, and any generational cycles of sin we need to bring down. He then asked Gideon to build an altar to the Lord right on top of the former stronghold. Much like Gideon, we can mark these moments in our own lives as monuments to God. What was formerly not of God, is now a blessing to God.
Gutsy Faith Challenge: Think about what you’ve called yourself and what names you’ve believed about yourself that were not given to you by your Creator. Start to replace those names with what God actually calls you. Make a new name for yourself based on who God calls you in His Word and repeat it often!
