Episode 72: Get Your Grit Back!

Most people admit they WANT to move forward with passion in faith, boldly carrying out their dreams and passions, but they can’t seem to actually do that. So why the disconnect? Why can’t our visions become reality and goals become real? We’d like to submit to you that the key is one secret missing ingredient: GRIT.

Vision is the foundation of faith turned to action. A vision is something birthed in you that becomes the foundation of what you long for, and the passion of what you believe you were created to do. Grit is what gives you the stamina to see it through. It’s what carries a vision to completion.

The book of Nehemiah shows a powerful picture of vision AND grit. When Nehemiah hears the walls of Jerusalem were burned and ransacked (his hometown allegiance since being invaded by foreign countries), he’s moved with pain and compassion.

  • Nehemiah 1:2-4 shows a pattern to any strong vision: prayer, fasting and time.

  • Nehemiah 1:7-11 conveys the heart of vision and grit as he includes himself in the prayer for direction.

  • WE have acted corruptly…

  • REMEMBER your promises

  • Grant us Your FAVOR

When the King grants permission to travel and rebuild the wall, Nehemiah was able to give him a definite time and plan. He was prepared for what he prayed for.

When the building of the wall began the enemy was stirred, opening the door to a constant onslaught of fear and intimidation. Nehemiah responded with “the God of heaven will give us success. You have no right or share in Jerusalem…” Sometimes we need to talk back to the enemy when he tries to steal the vision God has for us, and the grit it takes to bring it to completion.

The wall took 52 days to complete—a task most thought would take years. As each builder repaired the area around their own homes and personal interest, God repaired more than a wall—he repaired their faith. It took vision to begin the project, and grit to finish.
