Episode 63: What Do You Want?

What if God showed up in your car or bedroom and asked you one, big question…“What do you want?”

How would you answer?

In 2 Chronicles 1:7-12, we see this scene unfolding for Solomon, a newly appointed King, and the son of David. His answer would surprise most of us. Rather than asking for wealth, power, or influence, He says, “Give me the wisdom and the knowledge to lead the people, for who is able to govern this great people of yours?”

God’s question to Solomon was ultimately a question of motive and desire. God was trying to get him to verbalize what was truly in his heart. We, too, must ask ourselves:

What do we want the most? And most of all, why do we want it?

  • Solomon wanted wisdom and knowledge to lead God’s people because he realized he couldn’t lead them without God. They weren’t his people, they were God’s—and acknowledging this was critical because he knew that without God’s help, he couldn’t do it.

We must also ask ourselves, “Is what I want in line with God’s heart?

1 Kings 11:1-5 shows the gradual descent from a desire of wisdom and knowledge… to sin. Solomon’s love for foreign women (women that did not serve the one true God) led him astray, and away from the God he initially loved. Matthew 6:21 states, “Where your treasure is, there your heart will be also.”

Let’s take it a step further. Where your treasure and heart are…your head was there first!

If you’ve realized that what you want most in life doesn’t line up with God’s heart, here are some practical tools to see why:

  • Check your mind (What are you thinking about and dwelling on?)

  • Check your ears (Who are you listening to?)

  • Check your eyes (What are you watching and gazing upon?

  • Check your time (Where is it going? What are you giving time to?)

Gutsy Faith Challenge:

Honestly, think about how you would answer God’s question, “What do you want?” Think about how to maintain a good answer over the course of time.
