Episode 89: Keep Digging!

Have you ever had something that was yours taken from you? Something rises up on the inside when you remember, “Wait a minute…that’s mine!”

In Genesis 26:18-22 we see Isaac reopening wells that were dug in his father, Abraham’s, time. The Philistines had stopped up the wells after Abraham died, and when Isaac’s servants came back to re-dig them, there was a quarrel over who they belonged to. This happened three times:

  • The first well was the well of Esel (The Well of Argument)

  •  The second well was the well of Sitna (The Well of Anger)

  • The third well was the well of Rehoboth (The Well of Room enough for Us at Last!)

It took gutsy faith and commitment to dig wells that had been wrongly shut down and that, rightfully, belonged to Isaac.

Digging Principle #1: The enemy will ALWAYS try to block the blessing of God in your life.

During this time, wells were precious and expensive to dig. It was a significant attack to destroy someone’s well. This shows the envy of the Philistines towards the generational blessing of Abraham and his family. The Philistines knew that water was a life source so they tried to block the blessing that would bring life.

Digging Principle #2: We MUST fight to reclaim the blessing that belongs to us!

The wells didn’t just open up - Isaac had to dig and keep digging to open them.

  • The first well was a well of contention because it made others jealous. Anytime you start digging for your dreams or your future with the Lord, people may get jealous because they want the well that YOU have.

  • The second well was a well of opposition. The enemy won’t let you experience God’s blessing without a fight. When you start digging, press closer to the Lord and know that the opposition will come.

  • The third well was named roominess or wide places. After digging and staying with the stamina it takes to accomplish things, the Lord made room for him and his family to thrive.

Digging Principle #3: We must remember the blessing isn’t just for us.

Isaac’s entire family and those that served him experienced the blessing because they didn’t let contention or opposition stop them. Our actions affect other people and other people’s future.

In Genesis 26: 23-25 the Lord appeared to Isaac and assured him of His presence. He reaffirmed the covenant he had with Isaac’s father, and all that was to come.

Gutsy Faith Pondering:

What wells do YOU need to dig, or re-dig for yourself or your family? What’s stopping you from starting today?
