Episode 1: Facing Fear
There’s a King in the Old Testament named Jehoshaphat, who ruled over Judah. When he received news that devastating attacks by his enemies were looming—he was truly afraid. Wisely, he did something powerful with his fear. He turned his attention to seek the Lord and proclaimed a time of fasting and prayer. After gathering a large assembly of people together, he listened to one of his prophets as he said, “Do not fear or be dismayed because of this great multitude, for the battle is not yours but God’s. You need not fight in this battle; station yourselves, stand and see the salvation of the Lord on your behalf…” (2 Chronicles 20)
This King did something to battle fear that we must also do. He was told to:
STATION himself—which means he assumed a posture of watching, trusting, and listening for next steps. When we’re afraid we must position ourselves to overcome fear. The more we try to suppress it or deal with it on our own, the bigger it becomes.
STAND—This is an active and ready posture. Notice God didn’t say lie down and pull the covers over your head. He said to stand… but not to start punching the air. He assured them He would fight their battle, and he assures us of the same thing.
SEE—Sometimes we miss what God is doing because our eyes are on the wrong things and can’t perceive the power of God. By shifting our focus from fear to our Father, we get a glimpse of His battle strategy…not our own.
