Episode 2: The Comparison Killer
Theodore Roosevelt once said, “Comparison is the thief of joy!” Never has this proven so true as in our Instagram Highlight Reel way of life. We know that:
Comparison will consistently kill contentment.
Comparison will cloud the clarity of God’s call on our life.
In a stunning story of courage, the young shepherd David defeats a giant named Goliath. You’d think the King of Israel would be thankful, but instead, King Saul became jealous when he heard the women praising David, “Saul has slain his thousands, and David his tens of thousands.” The Bible says “…from that time on Saul kept a close eye on David.” In other words, he fell hook, line, and sinker into the comparison trap.
How do we overcome the misery (or pride) of comparing our lives to the life of someone else?
First, we must learn to run in our lane. We must be so captivated by our own purpose that we’re not distracted by the purpose of someone else. The more we focus on our race the more satisfied we’ll be.
Jealousy comes when comparison runs rampant in our minds. King Saul chose to “Keep a close eye on David” rather than keeping an eye on his own life and anointing. God wants to lead us to new and fresh life adventures; we must keep our eyes on Him.
Next, we must honor others, even when we don’t feel like it. This is the most mature and gutsy thing we do as believers and it leaves the biggest impact. Celebrate other people’s achievements and miracles. Cheer for them like the Father, Son and Holy Spirit cheer for you.
