Episode 67: What Does It Mean To Be Human?
One of the concepts Christians struggle the most with is REST. We’re either overworking or sloppily underworking…but the rhythms God has in mind are balanced and healthy. One of the reasons we don’t rest is because we’ve forgotten what it means to be human. We’ve lost touch with how to delight in the Lord and in life.
Genesis 2:2-3 clearly shows that God Himself rested after creating for six days and noting it was good. We understand this…but what stands out is that scripture says on the seventh day “…He blessed the day and made it holy.”
Holy means worthy of complete devotion. There’s something beautiful about setting aside time without our own agendas, and completely showing devotion to God. He is so good to both value and model the rhythms of working and resting for us.
Exodus 20:8-11 talks about taking a Sabbath that’s holy unto the Lord. We have to TAKE it. It won’t happen unless we intentionally value it and plan for it.
Why do we have such a hard time with this? There are so many reasons, but here are a few:
Pride
A Lack of Discipline
People Pleasing
The best way to begin is to decide this is our new normal, and nothing will stop it. This isn’t a legalistic choice, but rather, a God-honoring choice that brings health and life.
