Episode 68: Burned Out?
It’s undeniable. People are burned out. Quiet quitting is a phenomenon that is sweeping the nation. We are experiencing disillusionment with our jobs, relationships, dreams—and if we’re not careful—our love for God. What’s the secret to staying fresh and alive? The secret is being revived in God’s Word.
Psalm 119 is thought to be written by the prophet and teacher Ezra (some scholars believe David or Daniel penned it—but for our purposes we’re thinking Ezra!) Even though he was a committed believer, fully in love with God, he cried out to be revived in God’s word. Several areas surface in the Psalm that indicate areas that he needed to be revived. As we study this passage of scripture, we find 3 personal prayers of revival.
Revive my discouragement
Verses 25-27 say, “I am completely discouraged. I lie in the dust. Revive me by your word. I told you my plans and you replied. Now give me your instructions. Make me understand what you want, for then I will see your miracles.”
When we tell God our plans… and they don’t happen as we think they should, discouragement sets in, and can lead to confusion, doubt and fear.
The author decided to wait for God’s instructions. Knowing that when he does that…he’ll see God’s miracles.
Why is it so hard to wait for God’s instructions? Perhaps it’s because we’re talking so loud, telling God what we want or think we need…that we miss the way He’s instructing.
Revive my belief
Verses 36-38 say “Help me to prefer obedience to making money. Turn me away from wanting any other plan than yours. Revive my heart toward you. Reassure me that your promises are for me, for I trust and revere you.”
We have to take an actual step towards obeying God—and asking Him to revive our hearts towards him, brings us to the place of surrender and renewed love.
When we believe God’s promises are for ME, not just for people we think or read about, but personal, it changes the way we believe in God.
Do we merely believe in God…or do we believe HIM?
Revive my Passion
Verses 49-50 say “Never forget your promises to me your servant, for they are my only hope. They give me strength in all my troubles; how they refresh and revive me!”
Everyone will have troubles and trials, that’s a fact, but our hope is in the refreshing and reviving power of God’s promises.
