Episode 69: Wrestling With God

There are certain timeframes, or moments in life, that leave us limping. A limp is different from a scar. Scars can often be covered or hidden, whereas a limp follows you wherever you go. Scars you can hide, limps you can’t.

In Genesis 25 we read about Jacob, a troubled young man who listens to his mother’s poor advice and steals the birthright and blessing of his older brother, Esau. After running from his brother’s death threats, Jacob ends up at his uncle’s home. In the years he shelters there, he marries two of his uncle’s daughter’s and raises a family.

In Genesis 31:3 the Lord tells Jacob to go home and face his relatives (his brother.) He also says, “I will be with you.” Sometimes going home can be harder than leaving home and making it on your own. Sometimes going home…is the bravest thing we do.

Jacob was so afraid of the upcoming meeting with his brother that he wrestled with God the entire night before his meeting. He wouldn’t let up as he begged God for a blessing. Because of his persistence, God blessed him, but he left that place with a limp.

WHEN YOU WRESTLE IN LIFE, HERE’S WHAT’S TYPICALLY HAPPENING:

  1. It’s usually dark. (vs. 22)

  2. You’re usually alone. (vs. 24)

  3. God changes your identity.

    • Jacob’s entire life was defined by his name—deceiver. His name was changed to Israel after that night of wrestling. The name of the nation of God for generations to come.

  4. You leave with a blessing. (vs. 29)

It’s interesting that God never healed his limp. It was his life-time reminder that God is real, and God met him in his fear and apprehension.
