Episode 60: The Secret Anointing

Everyone wants to feel special, set apart, and ready for action. But why do we often get trapped in complacency, fear, or being overwhelmed by the wrong tasks and distraction?

God has special help and empowerment for us, unique to the things He has called us to. We need to learn how to recognize and grow in our SECRET ANOINTING.

Anointing is defined as the Lord’s presence resting on a believer in a way that brings fresh and inspiring proof of His power. One author describes it as “…the ‘burden removing and yoke breaking’ power of God. The supernatural power for supernatural assignments. Heavenly electric power!”

Before we can truly understand this, we must acknowledge the keys to honoring that anointing in our lives. We must abide in Him, be rooted in Him, and obey Him (John 15).

1 Samuel 16 gives us a glimpse into David’s secret anointing. Although the prophet Samuel had anointed King Saul, he now was instructed to anoint a new king. He could have died in the process of this task, given Saul’s temper and state of mind; yet, Samuel did exactly what God asked him to do.

Young David wasn’t out looking for an anointing, he was living his daily life and routines as he was supposed to. At the right time, God initiated the anointing. When thinking about the secret anointing God has for you, consider these keys to understanding:

  1. Your secret anointing will place you in places with people that will further your purpose. God placed the secretly anointed David in the palace with King Saul. For years David learned what the role of King was like, simply because of where God placed him.

  2. Your secret anointing will have highlight moments that let you know God’s at work and God gets the glory.  For David, a highlight moment was killing Goliath which let him get noticed on a large stage. But this wasn’t a time for gloating or self-promotion. There would be many victories in David’s life after this…but much confusion and heartache too. God was teaching him through both the pain and the promise that there was a process to his ultimate purpose.

  3. God will give you “hand-picked’ relationships to help you grow in your secret anointing.  1 Samuel 20 shows the love David had for King Saul’s son Jonathon. A deep friendship or relationships often help bring clarity and comfort during seasons of secret anointing.

  4. The timeline of a secret anointing might only make sense to God. After David’s anointing from Samuel, he spent seven years in the palace with King Saul, 4 years in hiding as he was hunted by Saul, and 4 years undercover in Ziklag. This is a total of 15 years after being anointed secretly before his anointing ever became established publicly.

God prepared and shaped David’s anointing through patience, courage, pain, and persistence. How is God using YOUR Gutsy Faith as he refines a secret anointing for the stories he will write through your life?
