Episode 77: God, I Don’t Get It!
What do you do when what God says and what you see don’t make sense?
There will be times and seasons where nothing is clear, and nothing lines up like we think it should. These seasons may be short or they may be prolonged, regardless, we must learn to trust first.
Jeremiah was called at a young age to be a prophet to the nations. Nicknamed “the weeping prophet,” he is known for saying unpopular things to people that didn’t want to listen.
In Jeremiah 32:6-10 he is in prison for telling the King something he didn’t want to hear. A Babylonian siege was about to begin, and Jerusalem would be completely destroyed. Jeremiah was gutsy in his fearless delivery of truth, but his circumstances became difficult because of it. In the midst of this, the Lord asked Jeremiah to enter into the worst real estate deal in history! God asks him to purchase land from his cousin that was completely worthless (like buying property in a warzone)… Even though he doesn’t understand, Jeremiah obeys because he knew God was asking him to do it.
Several timely principles come from listening to God, and obeying, even when it doesn’t make sense.
When God tells you to do something that you don’t understand, don’t discount that He knows something you don’t.
Understanding is not a prerequisite for obedience. Often, obedience is the precursor to understanding.
God is always working for your good, even when you don’t understand.
In Jeremiah’s story, the Lord was using this deal to show Israel how He would never stop doing good for them. He wanted them to see that He would plant them in the land. Furthermore, the property Jeremiah faithfully purchased was the symbol of God’s goodness and care. Even though all hope felt lost to the people in that season, hope was not lost.
Gutsy Faith Challenge:
Let today be the day you press on, despite your understanding. God has great things ahead, but you have to trust what He says, even when it doesn’t make sense.
